LOVE LOCK BRIDGE OF PARIS
What is a love lock?
Love locks are a symbol of love and commitment. A love lock or love padlock is a padlock that sweethearts lock to a bridge, fence, gate, monument, or similar public fixture to symbolize their love. Forever. Around the world, cities from Moscow to Rome, and Paris are filled with fences, bridges, and poles adorned with padlocks, but the Pont des Arts bridge in Paris is the most famous of all of them.
Typically the sweethearts’ names or initials, and perhaps the date, are inscribed on the padlock, and its key is thrown away (often into the nearby river) to symbolize unbreakable love. However, the weight on the bridge is extremely heavy to hold all these love locks in lines.
Since the 2000s, love locks have proliferated at an increasing number of locations worldwide. They are now mostly treated by municipal authorities as litter or vandalism, and there is some cost to their removal. However, some authorities embrace them and use them as fundraising projects or tourist attractions.
